Living the Cross Centred Life - C.J. Mahaney

If you get one book this year, this is the one we recommend. Cross Centred Life explores the same themes we are looking at in Underground this term: shaped by the gospel. When speaking of the cross, C.J. Mahaney says "Never lay it aside. Never move on." Through exploring what happened leading up to and on the cross, he shows us the amazing gift of grace and mercy God has given us. He shows that our faith is nothing, if not centred on what Christ won for us on the cross. It is a true understanding of this that will shape our lives: as we live in response to the cross. He shows us knowing this gives us true assurance and joy, and helps us fight legalistic tendencies and feelings of condemnation. A really encouraging read.
Stop Dating the Church - Joshua Harris

A particularly helpful read at this point in the year: to help freshers choose, with the right attitudes, a faithful church and commit to it.It especially challenges anyone who has not committed to one church; either going to many churches, or only going when we feel like it.
That said, the themes explored in the book challenge even those settled in a church. Joshua Harris challenges our critical, consumer mentality that we often bring to the church. He shows us the true Biblical view of the church and how much Christ loves it. He calls us to love the family of God in response, and to do so by getting involved in a local church, throwing off our critical attitudes and instead being loving and servant hearted.
